| | Tell us a little about yourself, and what being a patient advocate means to you? | | During my professional and personal life, I have come across people with very complex health situations, which affected them, their families and entire community. As, when a person is sick, the family becomes sick too. I was always disappointed to see how rigid, disjointed and dysfunctional systems that should provide comprehensive care actually are. | | As a patient advocate, I’m fighting for comprehensive, integrated care for every person with all of their specificities and individual needs and requirements. I am also fighting for a strong connection between healthcare, social care, labour and pension systems, as well as education. I’m running the Croatian national umbrella patient organization and I’m very passionate about amplifying the voice of patients in their own treatment and health management, but also in the healthcare system and healthcare policy. | | Why do you think 2022 is the year that patient communities can drive action? | | COVID-19 pandemic left national healthcare systems and some governments headless, and fighting with the consequences. The Ukraine war showed that patient communities/civil communities were the fastest ones to provide help in humanitarian crises, especially with the medicines and other health supplies. Patient communities have clear ideas about what should be done and how it should be done, to make the change in access to diagnosis and treatment, and access to innovation.
