UICC closes a successful World Cancer Congress 2022




Three days of stimulating discussions, new and renewed connections and significant announcements marked World Cancer Congress 2022. 
 

Participants from over 120 countries convened in Geneva or connected remotely to participate in a rich and inspiring programme. 

The enthusiasm to meet again was palpable, showing how connected the cancer community has remained through these challenging times.

Closing the care gap in breast cancer survival  

On the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dr Lydia Pace, Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham And Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, speaks about the global rise in breast cancer cases, the significant disparities in survival rates between income settings, promising innovations and male breast cancer.

Did you know… Men get breast cancer too

Men can also develop breast cancer and, while very rare, they often experience a lack of support and stigma. Cheri Ambrose, Founder and President, Male Breast Cancer Global Alliance, shares some facts and figures about breast cancer in men, and the particular challenges they face.

First ever voluntary license agreement for a cancer medicine

ATOM Coalition partners Medicines Patent Pool and Novartis announced on the last day of the World Cancer Congress an agreement for the first voluntary licensing of nilotinib, used to treat adults and children over the age of one suffering from chronic myeloid leukaemia.

UICC launched at the World Cancer Congress a special supplement of AMR Control emphasising the impact of anti-microbial resistance on cancer care outcomes and exploring workable solutions. Written by over 50 experts, the supplement is an excellent reference for the cancer community and a key resource for advocacy efforts. Read the report 
 

IJC research highlights key risks for breast cancer

Lower body weight and being physically active could reduce the risk of dying from breast cancer, according to research published in the International Journal of Cancer, a UICC publication.
