CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2020 Day 3 Highlights

For CML Horizons Virtual 2020 Attendees

Highlights from Day 3

CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2020

We would like to share our gratitude with the global CML patient advocacy community and congratulate CML patient organisations from all regions for their amazing advocacy work supporting CML patients.

During Day 3 of the CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2020, the audience connected all together and interacted with speakers and other advocates.

Medical #3: Treatment-free remission

Our co-founder Giora Sharf and our dear Cornelia Borowczak were chairing the Medical #3 session, introducing speakers and perfectly summarizing the content for the audience.

Very interesting presentations for the CML leaders were:

  • "Update on TFR research: Who is the optimal patient for treatment discontinuation?" by Dr. Andreas Hochhaus
  • "Monitoring challenges in countries where quality monitoring is unavailable" by Dr. Amma Benneh-Akwasi Kuma
  • "CML Advocates Network’s TFR material" by Celia Marin

Following the talks, the chairs were asking the questions coming from many attendees and a very hot discussion about treatment-free remission took place with the doctors and CML leaders.

Advocacy #3: Building alliances and partnerships

Last advocacy session of the 2020 CML Horizons Advocacy #3 was full of inspiration and invaluable information with the experiences of the different countries and regions.

Pat García-González and Zack Pemberton-Whiteley chaired this amazing session with the following talks:

Firstly, CML advocates presented two different case studies of collaboration between PO’s / HCP / Institutions:

  • Case study 1: Balkan Region – Rehabilitation Programme by Kristina Modic
  • Case study 2: Nigeria – Healthcare engagement with patient group and media for access outcome by Eunice Orekha
Then, Durhane Wong-Rieger made a fantastic presentation on how do alliances with other patient organisations strengthen our CML work? CORD and Rare Diseases (North America).

To finalize this part of the meeting, our co-founder Jan Geißler presented an update of the current work and powerful tools developed by WECAN in Europe.

Regional Session Reports

After the break, the conference went to the Regional Session Reports, where our Executive Director Denis Costello chaired the presentation of the six regional representatives at our Steering Committee.

  • Asia & Pacific Region – Rod Padua
  • Western Europe Region – Felice Bombaci
  • Eastern Europe & West Asia – Šarūnas Narbutas
  • Africa & Middle East – Bahija Gouimi
  • Latin America – Felipe Tapia (on behalf of José Castro)
  • North America – Lisa Machado
Every region shared their main activities, advocacy actions, projects and plans for 2021 showing that the CML Advocates Network is very much alive and kicking.

Closing remarks and farewell

Three intensive days of both medical and advocacy sessions were over and our co-founders Jana Pelouchová, Jan Geißler Giora Sharf expressed their sincere gratitude to all participants, collaborators, speakers, supporters, technical team, CML Advocates Network staff and appreciated all who contributed to the success of the CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2020.

Hopefully, we will meet face to face next CML Horizons 2021!
