CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2021 – Day 2

Saturday 23rd was a very dynamic day full of insights. We had a great time with 7 keynote speakers and 5 panelists who talked about the CML Advocates Network activities over 2020- 2021 and the challenges faced by CML patients during the coronavirus pandemic.

Over 100 patient advocates from all regions worldwide were connected attending all sessions.

This second day flew like a blink of an eye. The knowledge and experience shared during the conference was a real treasure.

Thank you for your active participation and amazing CML advocacy to all of you!

Advocacy #1 CML Advocates Network activities over 2020- 2021

The first Advocacy session of the conference was chaired by our Executive Director Denis Costello and the Region Asia-Pacific Representative at our Steering Committee and President of Touched by Max in The Philippines, Rod Padua.

First speaker was Jan Geissler, co-founder of the CML Advocates Network, updating on the CML Community Advisory Board activities followed by five excellent speakers:

Regional projects updates with Cathy Scheepers presenting about Africa & Middle East region followed by Felipe Tapia about the Latin-American region.

Our Head of Communications and Programme Manager Celia Marín presented World CML Day 2021 activities with an overview of this year's patient advocacy actions worldwide and our awareness campaign "20 years of life-changing CML therapies, but worldwide access is needed for all patients."

Next presentation was successfully run by our co-chair and Region Central and Eastern Europe & West Asia Representative Šarūnas Narbutas, presenting the CML Registry new application as one of the most important projects we are developing this year.

Finally, the session ended with the presentation of the Executive Director Denis Costello about the CML Advocates Network plans for the next year.

Advocacy Session #2 Panel Discussion including Q&A – Challenges faced by CML patients
This innovative session started with both chairs Lisa Machado from Canada and Jerry Clements from the USA presenting a fantastic panel of patient advocates from different countries and regions of the world.

The topic of the discussion was "Challenges faced by CML patients" in the past year and it was really exciting to check the diversity of the CML advocacy work run by the non-profit organisations demonstrating a strong capacity to recover and the ability to withstand adversity and bounce back from difficulties.

Many resources, tips and inspiring experiences, programmes and ideas were shared with the global community by the expert panellists Pat Garcia-Gonzalez from The Max Foundation (USA), Rod Padua from Touched by Max (The Philippines) , Fernando Piotrowski from ALMA Asociación Leucemia Mieloide Argentina (Argentina), Jelena Cugurovic from CML Association of Serbia (Serbia) and Eunice Orekha from Max Care Nigeria (Nigeria).

Networking Lounge
The training day finished again with an informal meeting joined by many patient advocates, discussing details about the previous sessions, sharing personal experiences and good vibes.
