CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2021 – Day 3

 
By any standards, the CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2021 was a smashing success. The overwhelming feeling from attendees was that they left better informed, inspired about progress made by many CML patient advocacy organisations and commited to keep on advocating for CML patients all over the world.

We would like to share our gratitude with the global CML patient advocacy community and congratulate CML patient organisations from all regions for their amazing advocacy work supporting CML patients.

During Day 3 of the CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2021, the audience connected all together and interacted with speakers and other advocates.
 
Medical #3: Optimization of CML
 
Our co-chair and Region Central and Eastern Europe & West Asia Representative, Šarūnas Narbutas, and our dear Mercedes Arteaga, Senior Programme Manager at The Max Foundation, USA, were chairing the Medical #3 session, introducing speakers and perfectly summarizing the content for the audience.

Really educational talks by three CML experts were:
  • "Treatment optimization (resistance & Intolerance guideline)" by Andreas Hochhaus.
  • "Pediatric" by Frédéric Millott.
  • "Age adjusted treatments choices and guidelines" by Pia Raanani.
Following the presentations, chairs were asking questions coming from many attendees and a wide-ranging discussion about treatment optimization took place with the doctors and CML leaders.
 
Regional Update & Presentation of New Steering Committee Members
After the break, the conference went to the Regional Update including the presentation of the new members of the CML Advocates Network Steering Committee.
  • Western Europe Region – Felice Bombaci 
  • Eastern Europe & West Asia – Šarūnas Narbutas 
  • Latin America – José Castro
  • Asia & Pacific Region – Rod Padua 
  • Africa & Middle East – Eunice Orekha (on behalf of Bahija Gouimi)
  • North America – Lisa Machado
All region representatives shared a brief outline of the key  outcomes that emerged from the parallel regional sessions during the week before the conference. Their commitment and energy were contagious!
 
Advocacy Session #3 Innovation
Last advocacy session of the 2021 CML Horizons Advocacy #3 was full of inspiration and invaluable information with the experiences of the different countries and regions.

Zack Pemberton-Whiteley, CEO of Leukaemia Care UK and also Chair of the Acute Leukemia Advocates Network, with our co-founder Jana Pelouchová, chaired this amazing session with the following talks:
  • Mind & Body and Hematological diseases, by Shirley Shapira.
  • Innovative campaign: "Why we want the right to be forgotten to avoid financial discrimination" by Šarūnas Narbutas.
  • Innovative new ways of fundraising (Crowd Funding) by Osnat Dvorkin.
To finalize this session,  a vigorous questions and answer section was held with the participation of many patient advocates attending the conference from beginning to end.
 
Best poster award
After three intensive days listening to knowledgeable and experienced both doctors and patient advocates leaders from over the world, this year's conference came to an end.
Our co-founder Giora Sharf presented the Best Poster Award congratulating the following winners:
  • First Prize Poster : AMAL, Morocco with "AMAL's Management of COVID-19 pandemic Challenges & Actions".
  •  
  • Second Prize Poster: Izumi, Japan with "The real-world experience of CML patient treatments and daily life".
 
Closing and farewell
At the very end of the meeting, Giora Sharf on behalf of the Steering Committee of the CML Advocates Network, expressed  sincere gratitude to all participants, collaborators, speakers, supporters, technical team, CML Advocates Network staff and appreciated all who contributed to the success of the CML Horizons Virtual Conference 2021.

Giora was also surprised with a virtual cake on the ocassion of his 70 birthday. Happy birthday, dear Giora!

It was really heart-touching to see so many patient advocates from many countries embrace the virtual conference and engage throughout the weekend. Hopefully, we will meet face to face next CML Horizons 2021!
